Your computer
Personal computers allow users to personalize or customize the equipment to their preferences. Many computers have built-in accessibility features to improve usage for people with hearing or visually impairments. Computer screens (monitors) can usually be adjusted to view more content (larger screen settings). You can also change the way your computer shows you text (size and color) and how your desktop appears (backgrounds and screen savers). Toolbar settings can also make a difference (large or small icons, number of applications or options visible) to how much you see on screen.
General accessibility settings for windows operating systems:
- Select Start, Programs, Accessories, Accessibility (can include a wizard, narrator (screen reading), on-screen keyboard and magnifier)
- Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, Accessibility Options (for mouse, sound (for caption/visual warnings), keyboard settings, etc.)
Screen/monitor settings for windows operating systems:
- Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display (to change monitor and computer appearance)
- Choose Settings to increase screen size (800 x 680 is standard for laptops and small screens; 1024 x 768 allows for much more to fit within the computer monitor's viewable screen area). For OneTouchGold.com, a screen size of 1024x768 is recommended.
- Choose Appearance (to change how your computer windows looks, including font/color)
- Choose Background (to set desktop color/pattern)
- Choose Screen Saver (to change screen saver settings)
Toolbar tips for windows operating systems:
- Your computer's toolbars (that generally appear on the left or bottom of the screen when you start-up the machine) can be modified to fit your preferences. Try pointing your mouse to different areas of the toolbar and then use the right-mouse button to access options menus.
Your Internet browser
OneTouchGold.com is best viewed with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. Please make sure you have the most current version of whichever browser you use.
Every browser has options to personalize your Web site viewing experience. Some people like as much text as possible to fit on the screen (especially so that when they make the Web page text larger, there's still not as much scrolling through content). Some people like as much color contrast as possible and some people prefer text-only Web sites. Play around with the settings to see what works best for you.
Even if you have chosen personal browser preferences, please note that not all Web sites allow the size (how wide you can pull your browser window) and/or fonts to be "scaleable" (the user can change the text size). When you start trying different text and other options, you will be able to see how this impacts the Web sites you visit.
Common browser options
(for Internet Explorer 6.0 and Netscape 8.02/Mozilla Firefox 5.02)
Text (Font) Size, Type, Color
Want to make the text size larger? You have this option on Web pages where the text is in HTML (and not a graphic or a fixed size). Just tell your browser to view the text in a larger font:
- Internet Explorer
For quick Text Size: Choose View, then Text Size in the drop down menu.
For Text Size/Type/Color: Choose Tools, then Internet Options. Select "Colors" "Fonts" and/or "Accessibility" to set your preferences.
- Netscape/Mozilla Firefox
For quick Text Size: Choose View, then Text Size in the drop down menu.
For Text Size/Type/Color: Choose Tools, then Options, and General tab. Select the "Fonts & Colors" box.
Tip: The larger the font, the more space the text takes up on the screen. Some sites may not look their best this way or be easy to navigate. Consider increasing your screen size or browser window size to make more room for viewing larger fonts.
Links
The whole point of the Internet is to hypertext link from one page to the next. Web sites indicate which words and other navigational items are "clickable" by visibly drawing attention to the links with color or treatment (bold, underline, etc.). For clarity, OneTouchGold.com has underlines turned on. For other sites, if you prefer underlines turned off for hypertext links, or would like them be a different color:
- Internet Explorer
For Link Color: Choose Tools, Internet Options, "Colors" then Links.
For Underlines: Choose Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab. Scroll down in the Browsing section, to see the options to "always," "hover" or "never" underline hypertext links.
- Netscape/Mozilla Firefox
Choose Tools, then Options, and General Tab. Select the "Fonts & Colors" box.
Toolbars
Internet browsers have toolbars to help you makes choices, perform functions and customize the software to your preferences. Especially if you use large icons or text, reducing or combining the number of visible toolbars will take up less space within the browser window, which gives you more space for content.
- For Internet Explorer: Choose View, Toolbars (to unlock/lock and show/hide toolbars)
- For Netscape/Mozilla Firefox: Choose View, Toolbars/My Sidebar or Status Bar (to show/hide, change icon size)
Tip: Try mousing over the toolbar until you see a 4-point arrow and then select, hold and drag to combine with others. If you mouse over the toolbar and then choose right-mouse button, you can also customize the toolbar and remove items or whole "bars" that you don't use regularly.
Text-only
For your convenience, OneTouchGold.com can be viewed as text-only. In order to view any page without images or graphic elements, choose the "text-only" icon at the bottom right of the page. If possible, the page will reappear as text, with navigation links included at top and bottom. You can continue navigating through the site in the text-only version, or use the back button on your browser to return to the standard Web page. Please note that not all features and content are available in this mode.
