An alarming 48.3 million people will have diabetes by 2050, compared to 20.8 million today.

Many people take stock of their lives at the end of each year, so we thought we’d take the time to look back and evaluate the major developments—or at least the stories that created a buzz—in diabetes prevention and treatment in 2006. We consulted doctors, diabetes educators and other experts in the field. Then we culled through popular media and scientific journals and vetted the information with our in-house experts.

So here they are: 12 of the top diabetes news stories of 2006—and what they mean for you!

1. The diabetes epidemic: frightening figures. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) predicts that 12 percent of U.S. citizens—an alarming 48.3 million people—will have diabetes by 2050. This is twice the current estimate of 20.8 million. What’s more, the 2050 estimate could be even higher if the rate of obesity continues...
