New Meds You Should Know About

Exubera® is the first inhaled form of insulin to reach the market.

Need help managing your blood glucose levels? There are some new medicines you should know about, including Byetta® (exenatide) and Symlin® (pramlintide acetate) and an inhaled form of insulin, Exubera® (insulin human [rDNA origin]). Exubera became available in September 2006.

In addition to improving glucose control, Byetta and Symlin have an added bonus: They help people lose weight and avoid the weight gain often associated with insulin and some oral diabetes medications. We talked to Annabelle Rodriguez, M.D., endocrinologist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, to learn more about these new medications, how they work and who can take them.
